I am one of those people that always seems to get a lot of stuff stuck between his teeth after a meal, so, before I became a quadriplegic, I always liked to carry floss with me everywhere I went. After my accident, I found a good product for flossing made by Glide, but it took me a while to condition my hands to the point where I could use a dental flosser with a handle. It was a great device, and had a reservoir of floss to replenish itself after every use.
However, Glide discontinued the product a number of years ago. Now, in its place, I have found a product that is even more user friendly for people with limited use of their hands. It is called the Reach Access Power Flosser. It is approximately the size of an electric tooth brush, and even has a battery operated vibration feature which may or may not assist with the flossing. I think the vibration feature is mostly a gimmick, but I use it since it is there. While my fingers are not strong enough to push the buttons, I instead use my teeth to just bite it on or off. It's a pretty simple process. The new Reach Flosser uses small, disposable floss heads, with extremely thin strips of floss -- just enough to get the consumer through one thorough flossing.
The flosser itself sells for approximately $5. They are probably available at Wal-Mart, Target and Kmart, but just in case they are not, I found them on the web for $4.69. The telephone number of the website is: (888) 896-5889. Now, here's the catch... refills are approximately $4 per pack, plus tax, with 28 refills in each pack. That works out to be seven refills for a $1.05, or $.15 per refill -- no great deal at all. Still, if you, like I, like to practice good oral hygiene and floss after every meal, there's really no way around it -- it is going to cost you $.45 per day, not to mention flossing after snacks. So, after checking out everything else on the market, it would appear that the Reach Access Power Flosser is the only option for the flossing enthusiast with limited use of their hands, although I did find something that looked interesting, called the Ultrasonex SPF1 SoniPick Flosser, but no one had them in stock. While it might be a bit pricey, I still recommend the Reach Access Power Flosser.
